The Band: Lordy Lordy from Toronto.
The Timeslot: Wednesday March 9th at 9:00 PM
What to Expect? Lordy Lordy kick off the festival at Rancho Relaxo — and man, what a difference a year or so makes.
At the end of 2009, I labelled Black Hat Brigade as one of the bands to watch in 2010. And don’t get me wrong, I’m still watching/waiting on them, but in the meantime the band that Justin Myler and Bryan Ward formed while Black Hat went on hiatus, Lordy Lordy, have developed a sound of their own. Where Black Hat was tribal indie-rock with a fair share of Wolf Parade influence, Lordy Lordy is classic rock, except it’s being played in 2011. They’re a lean three-piece with a couple of guitars, a drummer (who isn’t really a drummer but can play them quite well) and even once in a while, some harmonica. Some of this stuff feels like it might have been on those tapes the Dude lost when his car got robbed.
Personally, I’m just happy to see these musicians continuing to grow. Black Hat had some rough times, and if Justin and Bryan had disappeared for a while after that band took a break, I wouldn’t have blamed them. Instead they’re without a doubt considerably better musicians today than they were in Black Hat Brigade. Will that band rise again? Or is Lordy Lordy the new Black Hat Brigade? I don’t know, but I’m enjoying the ride.
Recently David Hustler took an iPhone video that turned out great at a Rancho set.
